Might as well quote who found this first:

If you collect a dropped item which isn't in your inventory and immediately hit the Delta screen button as the item description pops up when you hit the ground, you won't be able to leave the Delta screen, but you will be able to move around and attack at a very slow pace, until you are hit by an enemy.
