Imagine the case you're both using horizontal and vertical splitters. Which background change would get priority? Or do you want it to mess up by the order of which splitter was taken?
Reducing splitter sizes would cause problems as well. (For visible reasons)
Simply trick the player by using two triggers which move the player between two transitions in order to get that background change.
This system works for games as you‛re by far not needing to create anything as dynamic as for the LDer. And it would definitely need environment rules to work properly. I personally think it's making things more complicate.
